Oudomxai and Huayxai Airports in Laos Closed

Two airports in Laos are shut down. Oudomxay airport will be closed till the end of February 2019 while Huayxai airport in Bokeo will not open before 2020.

Oudomxay airport in the northwestern part of the country will remain closed for a much needed runway upgrade at least till the end of February, 2019. The airport is served by the national flag carrier Lao Airlines and also Lao Skyway, a private airline formerly known as Lao Air. There is only one route available from Oudomxay airport – to the country's capital of Vientiane.

In the meantime, Huay Xai Airport in the northern province of Bokeo is also closed till the end of 2019. The increased demand for regional air travel has made the authorities face the necessity to give a facelift to the airport. The upgrade will add 210 m to the airport's runway that will reach 1660 m in length in order to be able to accommodate larger ATR sized aircrafts. After re-opening, there will be at least two routes available from Huayxai airport – to Vientiane and to luang Prabang, both operated by Lao Skyway.

Huayxai is a popular eco-tourism destination with its Gibbon Experience program attracting quite a crowd to the Bokeo Nature Reserve. If travelling overland, you need to cover 500 km to get to Huayxai from Luang Prabang and 800 km – if starting from Vientiane. Thus the easiest way to reach Huayxai currently seems to cross the border from Chiang Khong in Thailand. The nearest airport is also located in Thailand – it is Mae Fah Luang airport in Chiang Rai
