Places to Eat in Koh Mak

As with accommodation on Koh Mak, the majority of restaurants can be found on the southwest coast in Ao Kao. There’s a pretty good mix here of both Thai and Western eateries, so you should have no problem finding something you like.

Best barbecue

The best spot for barbeque in Ao Kao is Food Garden, which also serves a huge range of Thai dishes, too. It can come across as a bit expensive, but all the dishes are designed for sharing, so you can just order a couple of things.

Cheap Eats

Several restaurants in Ao Kao offer both Thai and Western cuisine, which is great for fussy eaters. Aimee is well-known for traditional Thai cuisine, whilst The Chill or Hawana are the place to go if you love burgers. There’s also Food Art Hut if you’re looking for pizza and tasty sandwiches. For those on a budget, most of the restaurants mentioned so far are super cheap, but if you really are cutting back, there are also a few street food stalls scattered around Ao Kao.

A Happening Spot

Now, it’s unlikely that party animals will be heading to Koh Mak, but thanks to Monkey Bar, visitors to the island can still enjoy a few drinks and even let loose on the dancefloor.

Next door to the bar is Monkey Shock Restaurant, where you can enjoy barbeque, cocktails and a fire show, before heading over for some live music at Monkey Bar. This is definitely the most happening spot on the island, and thankfully, the beers and cocktails are cheap! It’s also conveniently located, right on Ao Kao beach, so you can head here straight after a relaxing day of sunbathing.

Western and International Food

Ao Kao is also home to some decent international cuisine restaurants. Baan Sabay serves comfort foods such as lamb shank and fried potatoes with cheese, whilst Swiss Sawasdee specializes in hearty German food – think schnitzel, sausages and beer. Both also offer some Thai dishes for those of you wanting to eat as authentically as possible.

After dinner, make sure to try some scrumptious homemade ice-cream at Koh Mak Cottage.

Best Resort Food

Over at Ao Suan Yai on the northwest, there aren’t as many restaurants, but you’ll definitely eat well at one of the resorts located here. The best resort food can be found at Cococape, Koh Mak Resort, or Suchanaree.

Best for Breakfast

For breakfast, there’s an excellent bakery at Thaidaho Vista that serves lots of delectable baked treats, plus pizza and Thai dishes, too.

Best Seafood

On the east coast, it’s definitely a case of quality over quantity, and there are several excellent spots that are definitely worth the journey. At Ao Nid, Koh Mak Seafood not only serves deliciously fresh prawns, fish and crab, but it also boasts incredible views over the bay.

Best Meats

Close by, Koh Mak Steakhouse is another winner. They serve lots of different beef cuts, plus some other Western favorites such as fish and chips and roast lamb. Surprisingly, despite it being a meat feast, the prices are quite good value.

Best for Romantic Atmosphere

In the more remote east, there’s a superb Italian restaurant called La Dolce Vita, and it’s run by an actual Italian. This is the best place to go for couples wanting good food and a romantic atmosphere.

Cafes and Coffee Houses

Nearby, Little Moon Villa serves the best coffee on the island, as well as great Thai food.

Thai Food

And last but certainly not least, make sure to visit the tiny beach hut restaurant at Laem Son. This is the most authentic Thai food you’ll eat on the island, and the tom yum soup is out of this world. You’ll definitely feel like you’re in paradise after a day at this breathtaking beach, followed by outstanding (and reasonably priced) seafood, plus some icy beers of course!
