Health Certificate, COVID-19 Covering Insurance Required for Entering Thailand

All visitors to Thailand regardless of their nationality are now required to have a medical certificate to confirm they are free from COVID-19 and a health insurance covering medical expenses connected with COVID-19, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has announced today.

Earlier only visitors from the disease infected zones including China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, Italy and Iran were required to show their health certificates. Today's announcement of the government extends this requirement to all nationalities in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

What does it mean for you as a traveller?

If you are planning to enter Thailand any time soon, you will have to obtain a health certificate at your origin not later than 72 hours before travelling, otherwise you will not be allowed to board the flight heading to Thailand. The certificate should confirm you have been tested and found free from the virus. As at the moment the majority of the countries offer testing for the COVID-19 only for those who have symptoms, this requirement de facto means a ban for all foreign travellers.

If you manage to get your health certificate, you will also have to show the authorities an insurance policy with a minimum coverage for coronavirus of not less than USD100,000.

"We are blocking infection from coming into the country. That is why people need medical certificates and health insurance to enter Thailand," Gen Prayut said.
