Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, India’s two biggest airports, remain remarkably empty these days.
According to the reports, Mumbai Airport is arguably living through the worst crisis of the decade with its previously super busy lounge areas and travelators looking abandoned. No more queues for check-in and security screening – you can just go through in a whisk.
Indian airports report the decrease of international tourist arrivals which have fallen from 70,000 travellers a day to about 62,000. The figures are likely to reduce further to about 40,000 after India issued a more strict travel advisory on March, 11.
The latest travel advisory puts a temporary ban on visas for those coming from Spain, Germany and France. It also urges people to refrain from all non-essential travel outside the country, especially to Republic of Korea, Italy, China, and Japan as visiting or transiting throught these countries makes travellers vulnerable to the Coronavirus infection.
India currently has 73 confirmed Coronavirus cases and these restrictions are placed to stop the number from escalating further.
