India's Largest Avairy Opens in Mumbai

Mumbai becomes home to India's biggest and tallest aviary. The new avairy was inaugurated this week by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray as part of the Republic Day festivities.

The avairy is located within the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo at Byculla, the oldest public garden in Mumbai.

The country's first ‘walk-through’ aviary is 13.5 metres tall what equals more or less the hight of a 5-storey building. It covers an area of 1,690 square metres and is ready to house over 100 species of birds including exotic, rare and common ones. There is a special enclosure for aquatic birds, too. With the time, more feathered inhabitants will be added to the aviary.

Visitors will walk through the aviary over a bridge, that will provide them with a unique experience of getting personal and closer with birds.

In the lower level of the aviary 17 special enclosures for animals are located, with hyenas, foxes, bears, leopards, Barasingha, Madras Pond Turtles, and antelopes among others. By June this year, separate sections for tigers and Asiatic lions are expected to be added.

Mumbai's avairy is now added to the list of Asia's largest aviaries in:
Edward Youde Avairy in Hong Kong
Jurong Bird Park in Singapore
Kobe Kachoen in Kobe, Japan
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
