Airport Serving Plain of Jars, Laos, Renovated

Xieng Khouang airport in Phonsavan, Laos, has been renovated to provide a smoother service for tourists heading to the Plain of Jars that was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July, 6, 2019.

The renovations were funded by Russia and included installation of lights on the runway and an electronic scanner, as well as revamp of the radar hall and the passenger building. The local authorities are working on inmprovments of the road infrastructure as well, putting on lights within the downtown of Paek district and sealing some of the previously unpaved roads. The works are scheduled for completion before the end of the year.

After that the authorities are planning to launch a campaign to attract more domestic and foreign turists to the site. Three major events will be organized as part of the campaign: the National Games, a celebration for the Plain of Jars as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the 65th anniversary of the establishment of Lao People’s Party on March 22, 2020.

Plain of Jars is a megalithic archeological site in Laos. Stretching over the upland valleys and the lower foothills of the central plain of the Xiangkhoang Plateau, it features thousands of stone structures scattered around and arranged in clasters of different size. The Plain of Jars dates back to the Iron Age and is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Southeast Asia.

The data of the Tourism Development Department under the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism of Laos reveals that last year about 144,000 visitors visited Xieng Khouang Province.
