Where to Celebrate Songkran 2019 in Thailand?

One of the most popular and colourful festivals of the festival calendar in Thailand is almost here. Songkran will be widely celebrated across the country between April, 7 and April, 21 depending on the region with the major festivities taking part between April, 13–15. Here are some ideas where to head to for the most joyful parties.

This year, the Tourism Association of Thailand (TAT) promotes Songkran parties in three second-tier provinces: Tak in the West, Mukdahan in the Northeast and Ranong in the South.

Amazing Songkran 2019 in Tak is scheduled between April 12 and 14. The main celebration will take place at Wat Thai Wattanaram and Naresuan Maharaj Stadium in Mae Sot district, close to the border with Myanmar where the Thai Yai ethic group and the Thai people will organize their traditional festive activities like purifying Buddha image, sand pagoda building and colourful parade.

Muk-Savan Fun & Fin Festival 2019 in Mukdahan, close to the border with Laos, takes place on April 12–16 at Hat Manopirom, Wan Yai district. Come here on April, 13 to attend the opening ceremony or simply enjoy water and umbrella tunnels, and choose your favourite sand pagoda at Sand Art Contest. It is a cross-border event with Savannakhet on the Lao side also participating.

Mineral Water and Songkran Festival 2019 in Ranong is where you need to go to savour Ranong's unique culture and traditions. The program features a traditional Songkran parade, 12 Zodiac signs exhibition, and a fair. Dates are April 13–15.

As usually, Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Ayutthaya, Phuket and Songkhla will have celebrations and activities supported by TAT. Any of these destinations is a great choice to celebrate Songkran mingling with locals and enjoying traditional activities.
