When ready, it will be the third key international airport in the vicinity of Bangkok, helping two Bangkok airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, welcome the ever-groeing numbers of tourists arrving to Thailand. U-Tapao airport will be a convenient entry point to the country for those who plan spending their vacation in the resort destinations of the Eastern Seaboard – Pattaya in the first turn – and boost tourism on Koh Samet, Koh Chang and the neighbouring islands. The project of the high-speed railway line which will connect the three airports is also under way.
In the northern part of the country, Mae Sot airport (Chiang Rai) renovation project also proceeds as scheduled and is due to be finished in 2019. The airport, located close to the border with Myanmar, is designed to facilitate the regional economic integration of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). The new airport will be able to accommodate larger planes like Boeing 737 with the estimated capacity of 1.7 million passenger per year. It will make travel of both domestic and international passengers smoother.
