Kengtung Myanmar – Best Value Hotels and Guesthouses

Kengtung has only really started to open up to tourists in recent years, but in that time a good selection of hotels and guesthouses have appeared in town. This means that you can expect a range of different choices, most of which are in the mid-range bracket.

Budget accommodation options are limited in Myanmar generally although Kengtung has a selection of spots where you can get a room for around USD 15-20 per night so if you are on a budget you will still find somewhere to stay.

Some hotels charge by the person however rather than by the room and if this is the case then it may be best to choose one of the mid-range hotels in town which will work out to be cheaper if you are traveling in a group or as part of a couple.

One thing to note is that some hotels are only licensed to take Burmese guests as they need a special permit in order to house foreigners, so you will need to check with each establishment to see if you can stay there.

Budget

There are a few cheap options around town where you can expect to pay USD 15-20. These include old favourites like Harry’s Guesthouse which is a backpacker haunt but which is located around 3 km away from the city centre on the street that takes you to Taunggyi. You can expect cheap and basic rooms here which have suffered some wear and tear over the years but this is also one of the cheapest spots in town so it’s a good choice if you are on a budget. Rooms cost around USD 10-15 for a single room.

Another option near the central market which is a little more expensive at USD 20 is Law Yee Chain Hotel. Note that this price is USD 20 per person rather than per room so if you are traveling in a couple or as part of a group then this is not the best value for money. Still, it has a good location and a free breakfast provided.

If you are looking for a hidden gem then check out the Parami Hotel which is located at No 3 Tachileik Road close to the main market. It is only 5 minutes walk from the city centre and 10 minutes away from main attractions such as Nong Tung Lake and you will get spacious rooms for the bargain price of USD 15 per night.

Mid-Range

For around USD 33-45 per night for a double room you can stay at the Hotel Khema Rattha which is on Taung Gyi Road. This is one of the newer hotels in the region and you will get friendly service as well as hot water and clean rooms.

Also in the same price range is the Golden Star Hotel which is located on the Airport Road. Rooms cost between USD 40-50 and you will find clean and spacious singles and doubles with hot water and Wi-Fi. Given the location this is a good choice if you are flying to Kengtung and want to find a hotel that is close by for the evening before moving on elsewhere.

Another choice that is between USD 40-45 per night is the Princess Hotel at No 21, Zaydankalay Road. It is pricier than some of the other options in town but you will find clean, spacious, and modern rooms with all the amenities of a hotel. As a result you can expect Free Wi-Fi, room service, and a 24 concierge service and there is also an onsite restaurant for you to enjoy. If you want to go out into the neighbouring villages then the hotel can also arrange bicycle rental.
