Opposite to trains or bigger buses, vans rarely offer you a choice of ticket class. All the seats are the same – call it standard, VIP, or whatever. What can differ, though, is the type of the van itself. Some vans seat only 9-10 passengers. For travellers this means wider seats, more space, and a more comfortable trip. Vans which accommodate up to 15 passengers are also ok but be ready to sacrifice on space for your legs and elbows and very often – for your luggage, too. Sometimes it can be a good idea to buy two seats instead of one to ensure a more comfortable ride – yet it pays to check with the operator if they allow this on your route. Pros of VanTravel
- Vans can be the only way to reach some of the most remote destinations, smaller towns or villages which are connected neither by big buses nor trains.
- Vans can also take you to some islands connected with the mainland by large car ferries which do not take big buses but take vans on board, too.
- Due to a smaller size compared to big buses, vans are more maneuverable on the road. It sometimes results in shorter travel time, especially if your destination is not far away.
- While vans do have an official stop enroute, they can also get you off at a more convenient point – no need to go to the terminal, just ask your driver. Note that it is not always possible, but in many cases, they will cooperate. It can save you both time and money you would have otherwise spent getting off the terminal on foot or by taxi.
Cons of Van Travel
- Vans accommodating more passengers may feel quite cramped. Expect limited space for your legs and elbows. Some vans limit the luggage for one ticket to one piece. If you have more bags, suitcases, or backpacks, you may be asked to buy a separate ticket for your luggage, which makes the trip twice as expensive.
- Not all vans run on schedule. On certain routes, vans leave only when full. Do check it with your operator before buying your ticket, otherwise, you may end up waiting much longer than expected until the van fills up.
- If there are more reckless drivers on any other means of transport than on vans, we are unaware of it. Some companies install speed control units on their vehicles, but it is not a rare case to hear this unit beeping the whole trip through with the driver not paying attention to it. Always remember to buckle your seatbelt while travelling by van. Though sometimes you will need to make an investigation to find out where your seatbelt is.
- For those prone to motion sickness there is a good piece of advice: take your medicine half an hour before your van trip, especially if your route includes winding stretches. You are more likely to feel motion sick travelling by van than by bus.

The sleeper ferry is comfy, especially when not full. It does rock back and forth and up and down depending on the weather. Should usually be fine though, I slept pretty okay :)
You should know that the boat to Railay just leaves whenermver there's enough people to make the trip so you wait there for awhile not knowing when things will happen but they usually do.

One issue was that there weren't many indication on the ticket/reservation for what to do after the first ferry to find the minivan but some people helped us find the was.
Great overall. We got to the destination early.

But the driver did not speak a word of English and there was no communication at all. We waited for 2.5 hours and had to tranfer to another bus, which was full. Have spend the last 1.5 hours on the floor in a crowded bus. Got where I wanted to be, but it was not as I expected. Communication lacks.

Lena RMake sure you’re at the „starting point“ early, because they drive you to the busstop in a minivan. Van left at 9.20, transit worked out fine for me. The actual bus ride is only 370, so quite a price to pay 330 for a 15 minute van ride. The main critique tho is that the bus did not stop at the shown bus stop in Phuket Town but rather 4km outside of town. Had to take a taxi for 200B to get to the actual stop. Ridiculous. Rana TAll in all okay. Good service at getting to the busstation etc. The drivers didn’t speak English well which was complicated. We stopped very often (every 10 min) to pick people up or trade some packages which I found kind of weird. It was hard to know which were the “official” stops.
I was told that eating is not allowed which bothered me because I had to be on the bus 7+ hrs. Also they said I am not allowed to use the toilet(?), which I did anyways but The toilet was very awful.

Adele RWe were supposed to be on the ferry from 9pm-5am. The ferry arrived at 3:30am. We were woken up by a foghorn. We then had to wait two hours to be picked up by a mini van. At 6:00am we were taken to Chumphon town centre and had to wait here until 8am for our next van. At Chumphon we were taken on a taxi which virtually took us around the corner to another station. The taxi driver was very pushy. Our bus driver proceeded to unload our stuff. Everybody on the bus protested and explained that we had already paid to the bus terminal as per our ticket and this service station was not the bus terminal. Luckily somebody on our bus had been to Krabi and knew exactly where the bus terminal was. It was throwing it down with rain and the bus driver had decided to put all our bags in the puddles of rain on the floor soaking our bags. So not only did they try to scam us they soaked our bags. Eventually they took us to the bus terminal. Really really disappointed. We wish the Lomprayah night ferry wasn’t broken as we will never travel with this company again. As for the night ferry the beds were comfortable and there was air conditioning which worked really well. But these are the only positives everything else was chaos!
