Hoi An to Ninh Binh Destination Reviews

Arrival 5 h behind the schedule.

We had major communication problems and the operators in Hoi An were very rude. We left Hoi An 40 minutes late even though the bus driver arrived almost on time but simply seemed unwilling to let us board. We had booked a sleeping bus but the departure from Hoi An is by a 12-seater van and not by sleeping bus. No one told us where this van would take us and that there would be a change in Hue. Once we arrived in Hue, we boarded the sleeping bus and waited almost an hour before departing without anyone explaining why. The trip then continued as normal, except for the stop to have dinner, which was at a very under-stocked place. So, tip number 1: communicate more and better. Communication is not an optional extra; it is as much a part of the service as transportation. Tip number 2: make stops at places that have at least a minimum wider selection (where we went you could only order one type of dish, no other type of snacks available other than packaged sweet snacks and cookies).

We’ve been on a few buses in SEA and this was our worst one. Most companies don’t give a whole lot of information on stops/not great English, which we expect, but this was the worst. We weren’t told we were going to switch buses until we got on the bus. Our only stop for bathroom was on the side of the road where we all peed in a bush. When we did switch, they said the next bus would be 10 minutes but it took an hour. The second bus had a bathroom but it was disgusting and they wouldn’t make any stops for other options. Still we somehow got to our destination an hour early. And we weren’t dropped off where our trip said it would, instead an extra hour away from our hostel. We also were rushed off the bus when we got there and didn’t have a chance to check our belongings, forgot a pillow. We emailed the company and they said they’d look but didn’t hear anything. Instead we ended up getting the pillow back because we asked the owner of the cafe we got dropped at to call them and bring it back and he helped us out greatly. There was also people talking till 12am on the bus so we didn’t get much sleep (not the bus operators fault but I’ve been on buses where they are strict on quiet time so people can sleep). Overall a poor experience with little information and we got no sleep. Would not book with this company again.

I had a good bus ride, we even arrived early! it was as comfortable as it could be however the toilet was disgusting, smelly even when you was in your seat, really dirty, no toilet roll. for the price of the ticket could’ve been better.

Somewhat dissatisfied with the service we received. Bus departed from Hoi An around 45 minutes later than scheduled, lady working the reception at the bus centre did not really keep people in the loop about what was happening there. Bus was comfortable enough, though the toilet was horrifically smelly, don't think it had a proper clean prior to our trip. Not to mention the basin tap didn't work and there was no soap, so you had to rinse your hands with the bidet hose. Worst of all, when the Bus arrived at our destination, it did not arrive at Tam Coc as was advertised online, but in the centre of Ninh Binh, meaning we had to pay for an expensive taxi which we shouldn't have needed.

Travelling by bus essentials

  • If you are planning to travel during the high season, weekends, or national holidays, booking your bus tickets in advance is highly recommended. The demand is at its highest, yet very often, the number of coaches serving the route remains the same. The earlier you reserve your seat, the better. On some routes, you need to secure your ticket more than a month in advance; on others, a couple-of-days advanced booking is enough. During such periods, try to book online beforehand whenever possible, as showing up at the bus station without a ticket may result in many-hours of waiting in the queue or leave you downright stranded.
  • VIP, 1st, Gold, and similar bus tickets are the most expensive option, but they provide a higher level of comfort. Normally the price of such tickets will include wide soft reclining seats, blankets, water and snacks or lunch, and sometimes some toiletries. Upper-class buses travel faster, make fewer stops during the route, and normally provide more spacious seating to their passengers and a better travel experience.
  • Not all buses have an on-board toilet, but generally, for all trips longer than three hours, all operators schedule a bathroom and/or a lunch stop. While operators definitely do their best to keep on-board toilets clean, the smell may be an issue sometimes. For longer trips, booking a seat a bit farther from the toilet may be a good idea. Also, using bathroom stops for your toilet needs is always better than trying to find your balance in an on-board toilet on the run.
  • If you travel by an air-con bus, make sure to pack layers. A hoodie, a warm scarf, or a beanie hat may prove a good idea. Air-conditioning on buses tends to be excessive, and running nose and sore throats abound after even not the longest bus rides.
  • Always use the security belts even if your bus ride attendant or driver does not insist on it. Your safety comes first – for you, for sure. All buses normally are equipped with security belts, but they may be fixed behind your seat. Take time to find the belt and fix it appropriately.
  • To avoid being disturbed by overhead lights, switched on during stops even at night, and too loud music or sound from the on-board entertainment system, have earplugs and a sleeping mask at hand.
  • As a courtesy to other passengers, avoid using strong perfumes or smelly foods. Some foods like cheeses or durians are forbidden to take on-board – check in advance. Alcohol is also prohibited on the majority of buses.
  • Note that if the bus requires refuelling en-route, passengers will be asked to get off the bus. Operators are not allowed to refuel with passengers on board due to safety reasons. Usually, it takes from 5 to 10 minutes and is often combined with a toilet/lunch stop.
  • If not stated otherwise in your tickets, arrive at the bus station 20-30 minutes before departure. It will give you enough time to find the departure platform and check-in. For international trips, you may need more time for check-in and border formalities.
