One of the best things about bus travel is that you can almost tailor-make your trip adjusting it to your requirements for privacy and comfort. Different classes and types of buses cater to the different needs of travellers. The cheapest trips are normally offered by standard-class buses. They may be called local, express or ordinary. These are a good choice for shorter trips. Sleepers or VIP coaches are good both for longer and overnight trips. They may offer berths or wide soft reclining seats, sometimes with built-in massage options, blankets, soft drinks, and snacks, or more substantial meals on board or during toilet or refuelling stops. Travelling by night buses allows you to save on a hotel room, but to ensure the most comfortable ride do choose the class of your bus wisely. Prices always depend on the distance you ride and the type of coach. For some, even shorter trips, it is worth investing some extra money and buying a seat on a VIP bus as it can save you twice as much time as you spend travelling by an ordinary bus.
Travel by Bus: Pros & Cons
Pros of Bus Travel
- Bus is the best choice to get to destinations that are not connected by rail or planes. The network of buses often covers almost the whole country, and their routes are well and long-established.
- Opposite to air travel and sometimes rail travel, taking a bus does not require arriving at the bus station much in advance. Check-in, even on international routes, does not take much time. Luggage allowances are usually very traveller-friendly, and the fee for extra luggage, if limits are set, is normally not very high.
- Bus tickets can be more affordable compared to air or fast train tickets. There is always a choice of ticket classes for all pockets. Cheaper standard options may be a bit slow and do not offer top comfort, but anyway acceptable and bring you to your destination. On longer routes, toilets or toilet stops as well as snacks, water, and sometimes toiletries and blankets are almost always included in the price.
- If you are ready to spend more, some VIP coaches offer seating comparable to business class on a plane with wide soft reclining seats, blankets, fewer passengers, and many other perks to make your trip a pleasant journey.
Cons of Bus Travel
- Newer intercity bus terminals are very often located out of the city close to bigger highways to allow buses to avoid city congestion. Unfortunately, it may create extra challenges for travellers, too. Getting to such a terminal may be a problem as in some destinations there are restrictions on vehicles allowed to enter the terminal, and you will have to use special carriers to get there. This results in higher costs as prices may be inflated. Also do calculate extra time if you are travelling during rush hours, especially if you are not familiar with the traffic situation at your starting point.
- Buses are probably the means of transport which runs out of schedule more often than trains or planes. They are heavily dependent on the road situation which sometimes can be unpredictable – accidents, road construction works, detours, etc. This is especially true for travels during weekends, high season, or national holidays. Do keep this in mind and do not plan tight connections.
- Travelling on certain routes or during the most popular periods may require advanced booking. Bear in mind that it is not always possible to show up at the bus station and hop on the next bus – tickets may well be all sold out, so organize your trip accordingly.

Anonymous Genius=Map on the bus ticket dowload. Traveling.com download included a map which tickets bought direct from the interbus site don't ; this is invaluable! Trip to Noto was seamless but the return was sweaty as air con was absent. Lack of air conditioning on the return trip detracted from the experience.

Anonymous I was extremely dissatisfied with the trip. The bus didn't go directly to Catania Airport. Instead, it made a long detour through downtown Catania, picking up passengers there before returning to the highway. I checked Google Maps and found that for the bus to arrive at the airport at the scheduled time, it had to factor in the time it took to get on and off at stations along the route (such as Taormina Train Station, meaning it didn't include downtown Catania). Furthermore, traffic in downtown Catania was incredibly chaotic and congested, causing the bus to arrive over 40 minutes later than expected. This prevented me from checking in at the scheduled time, and I missed my flight. My experience wasn't unique to this bus. I'm not sure if this route to downtown Catania was designed that way or if the driver was simply picking up passengers to enrich himself. I'm also not sure if Catania's traffic has always been this way.

Anonymous We tra. We travelled from Palermo to Syracuse. The bus left on time (in fact 3 minutes early), it was clean and comfortable. We stopped at a service station for a 10 minute comfort break around half way and arrived at Syracuse ahead of schedule. We were very happy with the journey.

Anonymous Price at the limit of fairness, very poor conditions. The price was right, a little more and it wouldn't make sense. I'd even say that if it cost one euro more, it wouldn't make sense any more. The bus didn't arrive at the scheduled time, the interior of the bus was old and dirty, many of the seats were damaged so it wasn't possible to cancel the recline. The seat belts have probably never been cleaned since the bus was bought and entered the company's service.

Anonymous Visiting Noto. The trip to Noto was so easy using the Getbybus site. The bus was prompt and allowed us to enjoy the countryside in comfort. We spent about three hours in Noto, of course visiting Caffè Sicilia for a lovely almond granita and brioche and exploring the local shops and enjoying the friendly people.

Anonymous Traveling in Sicily. The driver was professional and left promptly so that our arrival was at the time promised. The stop at the airport was right outside the departure gates which made it extremely convenient. I don’t like that I had find a place under the bus by lifting the storage compartments’ doors in order to load and unload my own luggage. As a woman over the age of 45 who has traveled often and alone with children, I have never had this issue before.

Andre Day trip from Catania to Siracusa. I think booking on the getbybus was easy and efficient, I am impressed, the busses in Sicily depart on time and pretty much arrive's on time. Good value and it is an affordable way to travel around Sicily.

We had to ask around to find out if we could get on the bus at a stop closer to where we were staying. Small luggage compartment Difficult to find exact location of bus stop in Syracuse Bus did not stop at terminal C in Catania airport, had to walk outside in heavy rain from terminal A to C. Missing seat belt in our seats Driver dit not assist with luggage.

You need to get your ticket on line, you can't buy one on the bus from the driver, but maybe you can use your phone.7 You can't be sure of the ticket booth being open to buy one in siracusa. Don't bother with interbus website, use getbybus.

Robert Disappointed in drop off location. In general all went well. Bus ride was comfortable. The bus did not drop us off at the bus station as expected. Had we known this, we would have taken the train which was more frequent, faster and cheaper. We only took the bus to avoid being dropped off at the train station which then require finding a bus ride up to the town. We wound up doing anyway and the Internet bus never showed up at the time specified. We ended up paying for a local bus.
