Over Yortdoy Travel
Hoewel sommige eilanden nu per vliegtuig bereikbaar zijn of met een brug met het vasteland zijn verbonden, blijven veerboten de enige manier om enkele van de mooiste en meest verbazingwekkende eilanden, verborgen stranden of andere bestemmingen aan zee te bereiken. Grotere en langzamere autoveerboten vervoeren voertuigen en passagiers over de hele wereld, maar in bepaalde gevallen moet je kiezen voor een kleinere maar snellere speedboot of catamaran om je bestemming te bereiken. Deze laatste bespaart je weliswaar tijd, maar je moet voorzichtig zijn als je snel zeeziek wordt. Als de zee ruw is, zijn hogesnelheidsboten die daadwerkelijk de golven snijden een betere optie dan catamarans die in plaats daarvan op de golven varen en je reis dus veranderen in een wilde reis. Om reisziekte te voorkomen of te overwinnen is het raadzaam speciale medicijnen te nemen. Raadpleeg je arts vóór je vertrek. Neem aan boord zoveel mogelijk plaats op het buitendek.

Yortdoy Travel Veerboottypes & Prijzen
Snelle veerboten zijn het duurst. Als je geld wilt besparen, kijk dan of er op je route langzamere opties beschikbaar zijn, want meestal zijn de tarieven veel betaalbaarder. Het is een vuistregel om de lengte van de reis na te gaan voordat je boekt. Op langere routes kan het verschil in reistijd enorm zijn. Merk op dat niet alle tarieven of klassen altijd beschikbaar zijn op elke route. Tijdens het hoogseizoen is het een goed idee om vooraf te boeken, aangezien de beschikbaarheid van duurdere privé-cabines vaak beperkt is. Kiezen voor walk-in tickets op de populairste routes tijdens deze periodes kan leiden tot lange wachtrijen. Sommige bestemmingen hebben meer dan één pier of verschillende pieren voor verschillende veerbootmaatschappijen, vandaar de aanbeveling om vóór je reis te controleren van welke pier je vertrekt/aanlegt. Laat voldoende tijd voor het vertrek om je boot te vinden en in te checken. Deze procedures kunnen op internationale routes een paar uur duren. Ten laatste, sommige pieren vragen een eigen betaling voor het gebruik van een pier aan alle aankomende passagiers. Deze vergoeding is normaal gesproken niet inbegrepen in je ticketprijs.
Reizen per veerboot: Voor- en nadelen
Voordelen van reizen per veerboot
- Met een veerboot kan je sommige eilanden, stranden of bestemmingen aan zee bereiken die anders niet bereikbaar zijn. Hoewel reizen per veerboot tijdrovend kan zijn en je soms last hebt van zeeziekte, compenseert de mogelijkheid om de meest paradijselijke, geheime, rustige bestemmingen te bezoeken die ze je brengen meestal.
- Veerboottickets kunnen online geboekt worden. Het bespaart je tijd en zorgt ervoor dat je reisroute verloopt zoals gepland. De optie om vooraf te boeken is vooral handig wanneer je reist tijdens het hoogseizoen, nationale feestdagen of lange weekenden wanneer er veel vraag is naar tickets en op routes met een beperkt aantal veerboten.
- Op sommige routes kan je de klasse van het ticket of de cabine kiezen. Er zijn privécompartimenten of standaardhutten met een aantal extra's al dan niet inbegrepen. Controleer altijd de voorwaarden van je tarief om het meeste uit je reis te halen.
- Reizen per veerboot is altijd leuk. Het stelt je in staat om de plaatsen die je bezoekt of die je passeert vanuit een andere hoek te bekijken. De meeste plaatsen zien er geweldig uit - en totaal anders! - gezien vanaf het water. Varen biedt een geweldige kans om mooie en unieke foto's en video's te maken.
Nadelen van reizen per veerboot
- De grootste zorg tijdens het reizen per boot is reisziekte, wat erg vervelend en onaangenaam is. Zelfs als je het nog nooit hebt meegemaakt, is er geen garantie dat de volgende reis per veerboot ook soepel zal verlopen. Ruwe zeeën en reizen per speedboot kunnen zelfs de sterkste magen om genade doen smeken. Volg onze aanbevelingen hierboven en neem je medicijnen een half uur voor de reis in. Een lichte maaltijd vóór de reis helpt ook - meer kans om zeeziek te worden met een lege maag.
- Vertragingen en annuleringen komen vaak voor bij veerboten, omdat ze sterk afhankelijk zijn van het weer en de toestand van de zee. Dit geldt vooral voor reizen tijdens de schoudermaanden of buiten het seizoen. Regen, ruwe zee en stormachtig weer kunnen je reisschema verstoren - probeer het flexibel te houden en plan geen krappe vliegverbindingen, zelfs niet tijdens het seizoen met 'meestal goed weer'.

Andrew WBoek gewoon via je guesthouse. We hebben veel extra betaald om via 12go/Yortday travel te gaan, maar de service was erg slecht. Op het ticket stond 8:30 vertrek en 30 minuten van tevoren klaar staan. Om 8:40 was er nog niemand, dus ik stuurde een berichtje en kreeg te horen dat het 9:00-9:20 was. Na een bericht om 9:20 kreeg ik te horen dat het nog 10 minuten zou duren. Het lijkt erop dat het voertuig dat uit Chiang Rai komt de pick-up doet, dus je wordt ook vertraagd door eventuele vertragingen bij de grens, waardoor je het nut van een verblijf in Huay Xai teniet doet, afgezien van de extra kosten!

Sem EWe hadden een probleem dat onmiddellijke actie in het ziekenhuis vereiste, dus we konden niet de hele reis doen. Ze hebben zo goed voor ons gezorgd en waren zelfs bereid om ons een paar dagen later gratis terug te brengen naar de grens. Ik raad dit bedrijf ten zeerste aan! Sally CDriver forgot to pick us up. No apology. Picked us up only after the hotel intervened and called them directly. We were picked up in the back of a truck tuktuk. Driver had no communication skills at all. We were left standing outside a waiting area with no information for 1 1/2 hours wait. No communication at all.

Niamh LThe Thai side of the transfer was perfect no complaints at all. However, the Laos transfer was awful. The driver was rude and drove about 100 miles an hour down these dirt roads and was overtaking on blind corners. I’ve been travelling SEA for 3 months and it was the worst driving I have experienced. No toilet breaks either. Dreadful.

Samuel WDriver was texting and listening to/sending voice messages for most of the trip. Picked up locals randomly and gave them breaks but not the rest of us. Tried to stop us having a toilet break, only managed to have a piss because two of our group just walked off to find a toilet before he could stop us. Driver spoke basically no english at all, drive was uncomfortable, road is horrendous and his driving didn't improve it. We booked this to save money and time compared to the slow boat, and thought this may be more comfortable than the budget slow boat. we wished we just went with the boat

Once arrived at the bus station near the Thai border there was no instructions on how to get to the border so we had to call the bus company. The bus from the Thai border was much better.

Hayleigh SI suppose it’s what I expected for a sleeper bus but the experience was just a bit confusing and uncomfortable. The van/car to the border was fine but the bus and the roads after the border in Laos were quite bad, I think I slept 2-3 hours total out of 15 on the bus. I suppose it’s nothing anyone can do but it seems expensive for the experience you get.

Anne SPick up was a bit chaotic and we left earlier than the scheduled time, but that may have been because everybody was on the van already. The driver was watching videos on his phone the entire drive which felt very unsafe. The driver also tried to kick everyone out at the Laos border, although most people had booked a transfer to their hotel in Chiang Khong. Only after some discussion did he let us back on the van and drove everyone to the agreed drop off points.

The only thing I saw could be better is the organization of they boat fron Pakbeng to Luan Prabang, we were at the last minute trying to make room for more and more people and in they end another boat departured too, so that second boat was only a few people there, while we on the first boat were really packed.
I think makes more sense to distribute more evenly or plan ahead or estimate the amount of people they expect.

Richard CThis operator advertised the trip with a duration that was, in hindsight, totally unrealistic, and we arrived with a huge delay. Furthermore, the difference between the total price and the actual price of the night bus (excluding the transfer) was way too high (so the offer was overpriced). Augusto GIn the voucher it said that hotel pick-up would be one hour before departure, actually the minivan arrived about 30 minutes before departure. Anyway, situation was explained when calling the operator.
We had to wait at the Transfer for two other passengers that didn't arrive, so at the end we started later than scheduled, but this was not responsibility of the driver, who brought me rapidly to my destination.

Iva BThe part in Thailand was an absolute pleasure! The driver was super nice and on time. The car was very good as well.
The service at the borders was a bit confusing but okay. Just once of the travelling companions didn’t get her train QR code at the borehole so she couldn’t continue and had to stay over at the train station village for another day! So be careful to get the QR code at the border.
However, the part in Laos is where the “fun” starts. We thought that the van part is done and we’ll be taken to a train, but no! You’ll get another van for about 4,5h. You’d think, no problem I’ll just work, watch film, read a book, scroll insta or whatever.. on the way. Just forget it, the only thing you’ll do the whole way is to hold hard on to something and to pray to god that you’ll survive and reach your destination in one piece! And it absolutely doesn’t matter if you are an atheist! 🤣
Ok I’m a little bit exaggerating but honestly only very little.. it was the scariest ride I have experienced in my entire life and I have been travelling Asia for a couple of months already 😅 I very much doubt that the driver has a driver’s license (or he is Thai and is used to driving left ) and I’m sure he has no clue about something as a safety of his passengers 😅 so so so many risks he took while overtaking another vehicle and I’m not even talking about his speed! You’re just flying from side to side during his crazy flight. He was insane!
It definitely was an experience I will never forget but I doubt I will ever take this ride again 😄
There was no toilet stop during the 4h drive! We had to request one after 3h as it was unbearable anymore.
PS: if you are experiencing just a little bit of a motion sickness, I advise you to take a pill before this trip!
Once we arrived to the train station, the driver kicked us out and that was it! No explanation, no instructions, nothing. And there was super mess! There were vans picking and dropping people everywhere, a few hundred of people waiting in front of the station, total mess and we didn’t know what to do or what time the train leaves 🙈 (one of our travelling companions didn’t get her train ticket and there was not a single person to help her! If that happens to you, just call the company you booked the trip from, they will sort it out for you as nobody else can)
Once we managed to get through the security (3x small 250mil water was ok and we didn’t try larger container and small kitchen knife was ok as well) the train was nice, comfortable and on time.

Darren ADriver was perfectly on time and we arrived quicker than expected. I found the driver very safe and secure apart from him driving between 100 and 120km/hr through towns. We made excellent time but at times I was nervous of the speed he travelled through buit up areas. Other than that, no complaints.

Gabriela MEverything was great until I got to Chiang Rai. It turned out they hadn’t booked my bus ticket to Chiang Mai, and all the buses were full until 3 p.m. (the last one of the day). I had to wait from 9:30 a.m., when I arrived in Chiang Rai, until 3 p.m. I was supposed to arrive in Chiang Mai around 3:30 p.m. but ended up getting there at 7:30 p.m.

Aoife MTransfer to the border was great, staff were helpful and it was organised. The bus then to the train station was awful. It was 5 hours (which 12Go had not said) on dirt tracks. Our driver stopped multiple times. The train however was fine, it was 2.5 hrs and on schedule.

Finley CRoads in Laos 💩. But that’s not the drivers fault. We got picked up from our place 30 min late and would’ve appreciated an eta… maybe we could’ve got some more sleep. Vans are impossible to sleep on as roads are dirt/gravel roads with A LOT of potholes. Also, if you plan on using usd at the border for your visa bring pristine usd. Our usd was folded and had a tiny marker stain and they wouldn’t accept it. So instead of $40 we paid $56 in Thai baht. (1800 baht)
