About Vietnam Railways

Company information

Vietnam Railways is the national train carrier of Vietnam. It runs the country's major railway line, the 1600 km-long Reunification Line, also known as North-South express railway Vietnam, as well as minor lines around the country, including Lao Cai, and Haiphong lines.

The main line connects Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam's two major cities. The Reunification Line was completed in 1936, with services running until 1954 when war divided the country. It was not then possible to catch a train from Hanoi to HCMC until 1976.

Note that some VNR trains feature carriages reserved by private transport operators widely known as luxury trains.

Vietnam railway system and most popular routes

Trains in Vietnam are a cheap, convenient and comfortable way to travel the country. The main train route in Vietnam goes north–south with almost all the major tourist destinations lying on, or close to, the Reunification Line so it's easy to get anywhere you might want to go in Vietnam by train.

Other reasons to consider train travel in Vietnam:

  • Taking an overnight train saves you the precious daytime of your vacation and some bucks for accommodation

  • Scenery from your railway carriage window, both urban and rural, is terrific and gives you a wonderful insight into the local life

  • Vietnam has a wide network of railway stations – you can get almost anywhere by rail

  • A train trip is a quintessentially Vietnamese experience not to be skipped

Here are some of the most popular Vietnam train journeys to take:

Reunification line

The epic Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City and Saigon–Hanoi rail journey takes around 33 hours.

The most popular stops along this line include

Hanoi–Lao Cai

This is arguably the most popular Vietnam train line with international tourists. It brings you to Lao Cai, which is the closest railway station to the hill station of Sapa. Sapa town itself does not have its own train station, but there are plenty of buses and taxis heading to Sapa from Lao Cai, around 40 km away.

Getting from Hanoi to Lao Cai takes around nine hours.

Hanoi–Haiphong

To travel onward to Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Island, catch the Hanoi to Hai Phong train. A journey to Hai Phong takes around three hours.

Vietnam train schedule

There are at least 6 trains plying the Reunification Line every day with the extended train timetable during peak seasons like Tet festival (Vietnamese New Year) in January or February.

Odd numbered trains travel from north to south and even numbered ones – in the opposite direction.

For the most comfortable train travel choose SE1, SE2, SE3 and SE4 trains, which are the best trains in Vietnam equipped with AC soft and hard sleepers.

Classes in Vietnam trains

There is a wide range of berths and seats classes for all trips from which you can choose depending or whether you want a seat or a sleeper, air-conditioning or not.

There is no such thing as a ‘tourist train’ in Vietnam railways rolling stock. Usually, the term refers to private luxury carriages that are added to standard Vietnam Railways trains on certain routes, e.g. from Hanoi to Sapa or from Hanoi to Da Nang.

The best choice for long-distance travel in Vietnam is sleeper trains. They can be both day and night trains.

  1. First class sleeper trains in Vietnam are called soft-sleepers.
1st class sleeper trains can be of two varieties: VIP soft sleepers with 2-berths compartments and ordinary soft-sleepers featuring seven 4-berths compartments with 2 upper and 2 lower berths. They are all air-conditioned and were refurbished to ‘5 star’ trains a couple years ago.

  2. Second class sleepers are called hard sleepers.
These are a great and budget-friendly way for overnight train journey, too. Each compartment in a hard sleeper is equipped with 6 berths – 2 lower, 2 middle and 2 upper. They are air-conditioned, too.

  3. Seats.
    Seats come in three varieties:

  • AC soft seats ideal for daytime journeys like from Da Nang to Hue. They usually have power sockets for charging your mobile devices.

  • AC hard seats are wooden seats, which may not be the best choice for longer journeys but work perfectly well on shorter distances.

  • Ordinary hard seats are exactly the same as the previous option but there is no air-conditioning. Yet windows can be open along the way to enjoy the view and some fresh air.

Vietnam Railway tickets

Vietnam train tickets can be bought online or at any railway station in the country.

Vietnam railways open booking 60 days before the departure date (for certain routes – 90 days before) and it is highly advisable to buy train tickets in advance for longer routes and if you need to travel on a specific date in a soft or hard sleeper.

There are no open-date tickets – you have to specify the date and the route for each segment you wish to travel.

Train tickets in Vietnam cost the same for locals and foreigners – there is no dual-pricing policy.

For online booking you have several options including buying directly from Vietnam Railways website. The difficulty here is that only Vietnamese credit cards are accepted, so if you do not have one, you won’t be able to pay for your ticket.

  • Both day and overnight trains in Vietnam are a more convenient and comfortable way to get around Vietnam than buses.

  • VN railways offer brilliant value for money. Vietnam train prices are surprisingly low – e.g. there is no other way to travel from Hanoi to Saigon for less than 1 million dong.

  • Trains in Vietnam are pretty comfortable. The majority of them were given a facelift several years ago and now are of a very good standard.

  • Traditional Vietnamese food sold by vendors in the carriages is super tasty and all part of the experience.

  • There are charging ports throughout the carriages.

  • Families travelling with children will be pleased to hear that children aged below four years old can travel for free, whilst those between five and nine years old get a 25% discounted fare.

Cons

  • Delays are common and the journey is often very long and slow so you should take this into consideration when planning your trip.

  • The air-conditioning is not always the best quality; it can be too hot or too cold.

  • Cleanliness of the carriages – especially bathrooms – may sometimes be an issue though the situation has improved considerably lately.

  • Check the bedding if you board a train mid-way between Hanoi and HCMC as it may not have been changed after the previous traveller.

  • There are no announcements when you are arriving into a station so make sure you pay attention or find out when you are due to arrive so you can set an alarm to wake you up.

Lots of bugs in the beds, and the mattress was really hard. Afraid to fall out of the top bed because of small railing.

Train #SE11 2nd Class Sleeper AC, Vietnam Railways, Feb 3, 2025
The train is dirty (there was a cockroach walking on the wall of my bed), the cabin is always out of number because even if there’s just 6 beds, they will put more people inside. The bed on the top is cold as hell because of the air conditioning, and in our case it smell so much as cigarette smoke. It’s impossible to sit because there’s no space, and is full of people outside doing a lot of noise. Almost all the stuff is rude and it will treat you really different compared to Vietnamese. Only good points in that was on time and that luckily the people in the cabin with us were not so bad.

Train #SE12 2nd Class AC seats only, Vietnam Railways, Feb 2, 2025
Was on time and though, I didn’t eat the food that they brought up and down the aisle looked and smelled delicious and fresh. While there was plenty of leg room, the seats in front of me were allowed to go back way too far. I had 2 little boys in front of me and I couldn’t move my legs.

Had 2nd class sleeper this time. No issues. There is actually no big difference in soft (1st class) and hard sleeper except 2 more persons.

Train #SE19 1st Class Sleeper, Vietnam Railways, Dec 25, 2024
Smooth journey from Ninh Binh to Hue on the overnight sleeper train in a 1st class 4 bed cabin. No delays. The cabin felt relatively clean and the bathroom was much better than expected. Our only complaint was the very loud music they played before each stop (first one being at 6.20AM), however I appreciate they need to wake people up before their stop!

Train #SE22 1st Class Sleeper, Vietnam Railways, Dec 14, 2024
We often travel by train in Vietnam and I love it, even though the whole system is completely outdated. I think, looking to the future, it is time for Vietnam to invest in the railway infrastructure and focus less on building roads. Those who only invest in private transport and expand the road network have not recognized the signs of the times. Italy could be a good example. Trenitalia has fought its way from being one of the worst train companies in Europe to the top. Today it is standard to travel on welded tracks so that you can travel at higher speeds and not at a maximum of 75 km/h. Even if many western guests do not like the fact that the bed linen is not changed after each guest, it does not bother me. The food on the trains is simple but always very good. In summary: coming from the West, I like train travel in Vietnam because for us it is associated with romance. It is like it used to be for us. But it is high time to invest in new rolling stock, improved tracks and the expansion of the rail network

It was an easy way to travel and the train station was very simple and the people were helpful. On the other hand, we booked a first class sleeper x 4 and it said that the beds was supposed to be soft - it was definitely not.

Train #SE1 1st Class Sleeper, Vietnam Railways, Oct 30, 2024
The train itself is very old. The toilet is working but everything is so dirty. The cabins are ok. Seem to be quite clean. The bed bunks are ok. Just before we arrived a lady came in and folded our blankets and put them on the pillow, just as we found them when we got on the train. They are therefore not washed changed, thats disgusting. Overall 30€ per Person is the absolute maximum I would pay for a 4 Bed cabin.

We went from Hanoi to Ninh Binh and experience was very good! The first class sleeping cabin was comfortable enough for the almost 3 hours travel (not sure how it would be for longer ones). The train is a bit old, but nothing really relevant to complain about. It left and arrived on time.

We had a lobby overnight train journey from Da Nang to Hanoi. The compartment was very modern with wider beds and better head room than the previous overnight train we had taken. The toilets were clean and they gave us bottled water. We also went down train street which was fun!

Travelling by train is always an experience compared to flying. I would not recommend a top bunk though, very difficult to access and limited space. Obviously made to accommodate the Vietnamese not Westerners.

Train #SE2 1st Class Sleeper, Vietnam Railways, Oct 10, 2024
Cabin was not super clean, but it was okay. They don’t clean it after every passenger. Toilet was smelly like every toilet in trains, there was a sink with running water and soap. In total nothing surprising for a night train (not great not bad), for the price still good deal. i like the views. It was on time.

Train #SE6 2nd Class Sleeper AC, Vietnam Railways, Oct 1, 2024
On arrival a woman was in my seat that I had booked on the bottom bunk and refused to move, I was made to lie on the bed above and even when the guard came, he spoke to her in Vietnamese and claimed I had the right seat. There was a strange man in the cabin who was kicked out for having the wrong ticket, he was coughing and spitting into a bag on the table. I don’t advise this journey if you have multiple very large bags, I had to lift my backpack myself to the very top of the cabin without any ladders. The beds do not have curtains. Be advised that you aren’t able to sit up in the beds, they are very small and coffin like. Would recommend booking a bottom bunk which allows you to do so more comfortably.

Trip was fine just a shame there's lots of selfish people and the train staff did nothing to discourage them. People pushed their seats all the way back and I was against carriage wall. I couldn't even put my legs down in the seat. For 16hr+ train journey you can understand my frustrations.

After we double checked for the train with the vnr Lady, she informed us that train has 20 min. delay. Which was not a problem and gave us time for an other coffee ;-) Seats were average. Staff on train was friendly and checked with us where we are going and came to us to let us know that next station is our stop. Everything went smooth and easy. Toilet were not too bad, bring your own TP and maybe sanitizer.

First class is outdated and dirty. Staff think it's a good idea to play tictoks on their phone at full volume at 6am outside the first class sleeping berths when everyone is trying to sleep, you'd think common sense would prevail but evidently not. Rats in the cabin too.
