인도 철도는 정부 소유의 국영 철도 시스템입니다. 케이터링, 관광, 온라인 티켓 발권을 담당하는 자회사 인도 철도 케이터링 및 관광 공사(IRCTC)와 함께, 인도 철도부는 세계에서 네 번째로 큰 철도 네트워크를 운영합니다.
인도 기차역의 분주함은 인도에서만 경험할 수 있는 것으로, 인도 전역을 여행하면서 기차를 타지 않는다면 여행이 완성되었다고 보기 어렵습니다.
현재 인도에는 고속 열차가 없지만, 2022년까지 약 100대의 신규 열차가 추가되어 운행 속도가 향상될 예정입니다.

인도 철도 고급 열차
일반 승객 운송 외에도 인도 철도는 전국의 주요 관광 노선에서 운행되는 특별 관광 열차를 운영합니다. 이러한 열차는 IRCTC에서 제공하며, 철도 이동뿐 아니라 현지 교통, 숙박, 식사, 가이드 투어가 포함된 패키지 형태로 판매됩니다.
이러한 고급 관광 열차는 차량 내에서 5성급 호텔 수준의 편의 시설을 제공합니다.
인도에서 가장 유명한 고급 열차는 뉴델리에서 출발해 다시 뉴델리로 돌아오는 라자스탄 일주 7박 8일 일정의 팰리스 온 휠스(The Place on Wheels)입니다.

인도 철도 기차 이용 안내
세 가지의 에어컨이 있는 침대칸 객차 또는 인도 철도 침상 객차가 있습니다.
1등석 AC1/A1는 2인 또는 4인 침상 구획으로 구성되어 있으며 가장 쾌적한 선택입니다.
2등석 에어컨 침대칸 객차도 좋습니다. 개방형 구조이며 각 구획에 4개의 침상이 있습니다.
3등석 에어컨 객차는 각 구획에 6개의 침상이 있는 개방형 구조입니다.
침대칸 등급(SL)의 경우 에어컨이 없으며 혼잡한 경우가 많습니다. 개방형 구조이며 각 구획에 6개의 침상이 있으며, 저렴한 요금과 창문 개방이 가능한 점이 특징입니다. 장거리 노선에서도 침구는 제공되지 않습니다.
좌석 등급은 총 3종류이며, 이 중 이그제큐티브 좌석 등급(EC)에는 부드러운 리클라이너 좌석과 에어컨이 있는 최상위 등급이라고 할 수 있습니다.
일반 에어컨 좌석(CC)는 주간 이동에 적합합니다.
2등석 좌석은 장거리 또는 야간 이동의 경우 추천하지 않습니다.
인도 철도 요금 및 티켓
인도의 철도 요금은 매우 저렴하며, 장거리 이동의 경우 항공편보다 시간 효율적인 경우도 많습니다.
장거리 노선의 경우 출발일 기준 120일 전부터 예약이 가능하며, 단거리 노선은 15~30일 전에 예약이 시작됩니다.
인도 철도 기차를 온라인으로 예매할 때도 동일하게 적용됩니다.
인기 노선의 경우 출발 수주 전에 매진되는 경우가 많으므로, 침상이나 좌석은 가능한 한 빨리 예매하는 것이 좋습니다.
탓칼(Tatkal) 티켓
사전 예매에 실패한 경우에도 막판에 기차표를 구할 수 있는 방법이 있습니다.
탓칼은 출발일 전날 오전 10시에 예매창이 열리는 제도로, 열차 출발 시간에 따라 실제 출발 14~38시간 전에 예매가 가능합니다.
많은 인기 열차에는 탓칼 전용 좌석과 침상이 소량 배정되어 있으며, 요금은 일반 요금보다 다소 높습니다.
인도 기차표 예약
인도 기차표는 온라인 또는 현지 기차역에서 구매할 수 있습니다.
온라인 예약은 인도 철도 공식 예매 웹사이트 또는 사설 대행사를 통해 가능합니다.
공식 예매 웹사이트에서는 모든 열차와 관광 쿼터, 취소 대기 예약, 대기자 명단, 탓칼 예약 기능을 이용할 수 있지만, 가입 절차가 복잡합니다.
사설 대행사는 소정의 수수료가 있으나, 인도 기차는 비싸지도 않으니 큰 문제가 아닙니다. 단, 12Go를 포함한 이러한 대행사는 RAC 티켓을 판매하지 않으며 대기자 명단에 올려드리지도 않습니다. 이 방식으로 예약되는 모든 티켓은 확정된 상태로 예약됩니다. 이 옵션을 이용하시면 인도 철도 온라인 예매를 쉽고 빠르게 진행하실 수 있습니다.
장점
- 인도 철도는 전국 대부분의 주요 및 소규모 목적지를 연결합니다. 사실 인도 내 대부분의 두 목적지는 기차로 이동이 가능하다고 보면 됩니다.
- 철도 요금이 매우 저렴합니다.
- 공식 예매 시스템에는 관광 쿼터, 취소 대기 예약, 대기자 명단, 탓칼 예약 등이 있어 특이하고 복잡해 보이지만 효율적으로 운영됩니다.
- 기차로 여행하는 것은 인도의 실제 일상을 경험하기에 가장 좋은 방법입니다.
단점
- 에어컨 침대칸 객차의 경우 상당히 미리 예약해야 하는 경우가 많습니다.
- 예매 가능한 침상 또는 좌석(SL 및 2등석 좌석)이 있는 저가 등급의 객차는 과밀해질 수 있습니다.
- 저가 등급에서는 화장실 청결 문제가 발생하는 경우가 있습니다.

First time travelling in India by train. Have been spoilt by train services in Thailand so wasn't sure what to expect. The booking of tickets was very easy and I was kept informed at every point. The train journey was an experience. It did arrive an hour late but we arrived at Ernakulam on time. Second class with AC was fine and had comfortable beds. It is so different travelling in India but just give it a go, its an education

버스가 두시간반 연착 늧게 온것빼고는 전반적으로좋았고 앞으로는 버스티켙매매할때 버스에 특히 내부 상세 사진을 업뎃해주면 체크할때 도움이되겠다
참고로 버스 타고보니까 실내 오ㅑ전 개굴처럼생겼고 슬링핑 배드 내부는 담요.베게등 손도 대기샳을 정도로 불결했다

Travelling by train in India has been a very enjoyable experience so far! People , even the Governmental Tourism Office Delhi, advised me against these pre-booked tickets. I had to buy a flex train pass from them. I immediately felt that in India you had to watch out anywhere and not trust anyone beforehand.

I travelled from Hospet to Margao in May 2025. The train was almost on time in departure, only 10 minutes late which is acceptable. However it was 1 hour late on destination. Train was clean, bathroom also clean but typical Indian train bathroom…. I could sleep very well.

Ticket booking with 12go was perfect. All other Indian forum's were very different. There was little to no help for tourists at the station. The train was OK. The meal is a nice touch for travellers. Again agra cantt full of scammers and no help for tourist.

All was perfect! The train arrived early to Coimbatore station and since it started from there, we could get in and make ourselves comfortable 15 minutes before departure. AC was good, not too cold. They served us a sreat snack with mango juice, samosa and some sweets and crackers... then after few hours veg dinner! Spicy but fresh and very tasty. The train went smooth and was very punctual. Service was good and the seats were very comfortable.

After controlling my ticket on the train, they made me pay an extra of Rs. 50 saying that the rate had changed. Besides that, the journey went very well. Train left right on time. The platform was no correct though, it was announced at #5 but was stationed at #6.

Best train we've been on so far in India. Breakfast and lunch is provided as part of the ticket price, as is water and a few snacks. The train is very clean and not to mention fast!

The train was 3 hours late (it’s ok for India) but impossible the check the status on the Indian railway website because the train was starting the day before. In the station no indications, fortunately I downloaded an app, without this app, impossible to know where and when the train come. When the train arrived it was not the same number but it was our train 😆 So not a bad experience but we have to be ready to spend time in the station

Customer support with this company is nonexistent. They are not equipped to assist in finding other means of travel when a flight or train gets canceled.
I had six legs of my journey in India. I had received six messages that there were failures in the bookings. I have also had six cancellations in the bookings. This company has less than 30% success rate. I am still having to search with another company to get the final leg of my journey booked.
I have a few hundred dollars worth of tickets that have canceled. They claim they will refund in 3 to 6 months. Would you care to bet if if they will do that or if I will have to contact my charge card company to get the money back from them?

It would have been good to know that for Indian railways 1st class if I text 139 and the passenger number, I could have found the cabin number.
Train was bang on time.
1st class sleeper was clean, safe and relatively comfortable, though my western hips found the beds a little firm. Honestly, it was waaay better than expected. Loved it!
